Swim Teens
Here at The Water School we recognise the need to treat teenagers, not as the children they were, but as the young adults that they are becoming. We realise that being a teenager is a confusing and difficult enough time already without the added confidence issues of learning something new that other classmates or friends may have learned at a young age. Our experienced teachers understand that no teenager would be comfortable learning how to swim in a beginners class with much younger children. We also understand how some teenagers may feel embarrassed or even ashamed to admit that they may not have had the opportunity to learn to swim when they were younger.
This is why The Water School would like to start a teenagers only class, specifically for young adults aged 13 to 17. We are hoping that this will give them the confidence to start learning to swim in a class with people their own age. There would also be a separate section in the class for those who feel they can swim a bit, but who would like to improve their technique.
I remember as a teenager myself, I suffered often from very painful knee and hip joints as my bones grew faster than my ligaments, putting a lot of strain on them. As a result I was not a particularly sporty person. I did not like playing football, basketball or rugby, and I often found it was difficult in school for my classmates and my teachers to understand this. The one sport I always enjoyed, and that didn’t put added strain my ligaments, was swimming and it helped to keep me active during those incredibly important years. Now as an adult, I feel its even more important to help other teenagers, who may be in a similar situation, to realise that swimming may be a suitable alternative for them as well.
Being confident and safe in the water is key to being able to enjoy other water-based sports such as kayaking, scuba diving, sailing and even fishing. Or even just being able to go to the beach with your friends in the summer time!
Our aim at The Water School is to be able to teach and pass on this fundamentally important life skill to anyone who wants to learn, whatever their age or ability, and to be able to provide a safe, comfortable and fun place in which to learn it.
If you are interested in taking part in Teenagers classes please email us on info@thewaterschool.ie with the teenager’s details, and we will add their name to our list. When we have enough names we will contact you to arrange classes.
